Run a quiz live with your class
Make a quiz, put the code on the board, and watch the answers arrive. Pupils scan it or type it in - no account, no email address, nothing to install - then type a name and start. You see who has finished and who is still working, and you can take the results away as a spreadsheet. Then the session deletes itself.
2 free generations on every account. No card needed. Running a session costs nothing extra.
One session, three screens
The link you hand out, the question a pupil answers, and the register you watch.
Step one
What you hand out
One link and one code. Read the code out, or write it on the board — it leaves out the characters pupils misread there, so there is no letter O next to a zero and no capital I next to a one.
Join code

studio.teachit.co.uk/q/H7KQ4M
Your name
e.g. Alex J.
That is the entire sign-in. No email address, no password, no app.
Step two
What a pupil sees
One question at a time, with nothing marked. The mark scheme is not in their browser — marking happens on the server after they submit, so there is nothing to read off the page.
Question 4 of 10
Which phrase is an example of personification?
- A. as busy as a bee
- B. the wind whispered through the trees
- C. a heart of stone
- D. the thunder was loud
When they finish they see their own mark and which questions they missed — and only their own.
Step three
What you see, while they work
The register refreshes every few seconds. Expand a row for that pupil’s answer to each question, and take the whole class away as a CSV before the session expires.
| Pupil | Mark | Progress | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex J. | 9/10 | 9 right · 1 wrong | Finished |
| Priya R. | 7/10 | 7 right · 3 wrong | Finished |
| Sam O. | 4/10 | 4 right · 2 wrong | In progress |
| Dana W. | 3/10 | 3 right · 0 wrong | In progress |
Illustration. A real session holds a class’s own results and deletes them within 24 hours, so there is no real register to publish here.
How it works
Step 1
Start with a quiz or an exit ticket
Generate a Quiz resource from a topic and year group, or add a quiz to a PDF, YouTube lesson or recording you have already transcribed. Exit tickets work the same way, and if you generated a multi-day bundle you pick which day you are running - each gets its own link and its own register.
Step 2
Choose Assign to class
You get a QR code, a link and a six-character code. The code deliberately leaves out the characters pupils misread on a whiteboard - no letter O beside a zero, no capital I beside a one. Label the session if you are running more than one, so "Lesson 3" and "Lesson 5" do not blur together.
Step 3
Put it on the projector
Show on projector fills the screen with the QR code, the address to type and the join code, big enough to read from the back. Pupils scan it with the camera they already have. It shows a running count of how many have joined, and never a name - it is pointed at the whole room.
Step 4
Pupils type a name and start
That is the whole sign-in. Ask for a first name and last initial - enough for you to read the register, and no more than you need. Up to 100 pupils can join a single session.
Step 5
Watch the register fill
Names appear as pupils join, and each row updates as they work. When the class is done, download the results as a CSV.
What you get
- A code the back row can scan
- Show on projector puts the QR code, the address and the six characters on the whole screen at once, so a class of thirty joins in the time it takes to read it. The QR stays dark on white whatever theme you use, because that is what phone cameras are tuned for.
- A register that updates while you teach
- One row per pupil, refreshing every few seconds: finished or still working, and how many they have right so far. Enough to see from the front of the room whether to move on or go back over question 4.
- The answer to every question, per pupil
- Expand a row to see what one pupil actually chose, question by question. This is the part that tells you which misconception you are dealing with, rather than just who got what mark.
- Results you can keep
- Download the whole class as a CSV and put it wherever your records live. Worth doing before the session expires, because after that it is gone.
- Marking that pupils cannot see around
- Answers are marked on the server. The mark scheme never reaches a pupil's browser before they submit, and each pupil can only ever load their own attempt.
- A quiz that cannot change underneath them
- The questions are copied into the session at the moment you create it. Edit or regenerate the quiz mid-lesson and the class carries on with what they started - what they are marked against does not move.
Built to disappear
A class set of quiz results is the kind of data that piles up fastest and matters least a week later, so sessions are built to expire rather than accumulate.
- The link accepts answers for 4 hours, or until you close it. A closed session cannot be reopened.
- Results stay readable to you for 24 hours, then the entire session is deleted - names, answers and all.
- Pupils never create an account, never give an email address and are never asked for a password.
- There is no pupil profile anywhere in the system, and nothing a pupil types is used for anything but showing you that session's results.
The privacy policy sets out the rest: what is collected, which providers process it, and how long each thing is kept.
What it is not
This is the quick check you run in the room, not a quizzing platform. There is no live leaderboard, no per-question timer, no team mode and no sound effects. There is no class list to import and no markbook to sync to - the CSV is how marks leave. And because pupils identify themselves by typing a name, it is not a secure or invigilated test.
Questions
- Do pupils need an account to take the quiz?
- No. They open the link, type a name and start. There is no sign-up, no email address, no password and nothing to install - it runs in whatever browser is on the device they already have.
- What if a pupil cannot scan the QR code?
- The projector screen shows the address and the join code beside the QR, so a pupil can type them instead - the code entry page asks for the six characters and nothing else. You can also copy the link and post it wherever your class already looks.
- How long does a live quiz link stay open?
- It accepts answers for 4 hours, or until you close it - whichever comes first. Results stay readable to you for 24 hours from when the session started, and then the whole session is deleted. Download the CSV if you need to keep them.
- How many pupils can join one session?
- Up to 100 in a single session. If you teach the same quiz to several classes, run a separate session for each - you can have more than one open at a time and label them so the registers stay apart.
- Can pupils see the answers before they submit?
- No. Marking happens on the server, so the mark scheme is never sent to a pupil's browser. Each pupil is identified by a random token stored in their own browser, so sharing the link does not let one pupil read another's answers.
- What happens if I edit the quiz while a class is taking it?
- Nothing changes for the class. The questions are frozen into the session when you create it, so editing, regenerating or even deleting the quiz afterwards does not alter what the pupils in front of you are answering or how it is marked.
- Can I use this for a formal assessment?
- It is built for the check you do in the room - a starter, a plenary, a quick read of who has understood today's lesson. Pupils identify themselves by typing a name, so treat the results as formative rather than as a secure, invigilated test.
- Which quizzes can I assign?
- Any of them. A Quiz resource, whether you started from a topic or from your own PDF, video or recording, carries Assign to class on its action rail. So does a quiz added to a transcribed note through Generate Study Materials - open the note's Quiz tab and the button is in the same place. Exit tickets carry it too.
- What happens to written answers on an exit ticket?
- You mark them, and nothing marks them for you. An exit ticket can ask for a sentence rather than a multiple choice, and scoring that by matching text would mark a right answer wrong for using different words - so pupils type it and you read it beside the expected answer, then tap Right or Not yet. Until you do, it sits in a 'still to read' column and counts as neither right nor wrong. Your marks fold into the class total and the CSV as you work through them.
- What if a pupil leaves a question blank?
- It shows as blank, not as wrong. A pupil who ran out of time and a pupil who picked the wrong answer need different things from you, so a skipped question is never counted against them - it is simply missing, and shown as missing.
- Does running a live session use a generation?
- No. The generation was spent making the quiz. Assigning it to a class, running it, and running it again for your next class all cost nothing.
